King Henry VIII School (Abergavenny)

September 2023 Morgan Sindall spearheaded the recent development project of Ysgol 3-19 Brenin Harri’r VIII / King Henry VIII 3-19 School with Whitehead providing mechanical, electrical and public health engineering services. This exceptional project came to an end in April 2025 so we are looking back at just how much it brings to the community.

This project is Monmouthshire’s first Net Zero Carbon School, including Air Source Heat Pumps Underfloor Heating, Rainwater Harvesting & Stormwater Retention, Building Management System (BMS), Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels, Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure, LED Lighting & Daylight Controls. With 15,000m2+ of useable floor space, it was built with a design which purposefully integrates nature and natural elements into the building. All works have been delivered in line with our ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) certified management systems

While working on the school we had a peak of around 70 personnel on site a week with 11 of those being apprentices. Having apprentices on site highlights our commitment to Targeted Recruitment and Training (TRT). This aligns with project requirements and supports industry skills development through on-site experience. During their time on site our apprentices took part in a Careers Wales event where they were filmed carrying out their works to encourage post-16 learners who are exploring opportunities beyond university — highlighting the value of apprenticeships and encouraging the next generation to consider careers in construction. The site has maintained a clean health and safety record with no accidents reported to date — a reflection of our proactive safety management.

When asked about how he felt being able to work on this site our Project Director Scott Pugh said “Delivering the King Henry VIII School project in partnership with Morgan Sindall Construction and Monmouthshire County Council has been a proud milestone, combining innovation, collaboration, and community impact to create an exceptional learning environment that will inspire generations to come.”
