‘Sponsorship and fundraising are huge parts of our business’

Sponsorship and Fundraising

Sponsorship and fundraising are huge parts of our corporate social responsibility strategy, and we like to be as hands on as possible with these endeavours. Being able to support local teams or individuals and give them the opportunity to flourish with our help, is an important part of our work.

We have been headline sponsors for a key local cycling event in South Wales – the St Davids Hospice ‘Tour de Gwent’ since 2015. Furthermore, our sponsorship of 54321 Cymru, a charitable committee set up in 2012, has seen the committee raise nearly £400k for 71 different charities and good causes, via 10 bike rides across Europe and South Wales.

The popular Whitehead golf day is a key, exciting event in our busy calendar, being held annually for the last 20 years. Charities that have benefitted include Llamau, Balloons, Noah’s Ark Childrens Hospital, Ty Hafan, St. David’s Hospice and Prostate Cymru – the latter naming us as Corporate Fundraiser of the Year in 2023.

As a business we sponsor a wide variety of teams and indivduals. Our ongoing sponsorship of junior badminton player, Harper Leigh, has seen Harper achieve a current ranking of 105 in the Junior World list and 1133 in the senior world rankings. We also sponsor Perranporth Rugby Club in Cornwall, Dings Womens Rugby in Bristol and the Sam Peard Mini Football Academy in Newport, to name but a few.

Mental Health Team
We recognise that the mental health of our employees is important and to support this we aim to have at least 10% of our workforce as fully trained mental health first aiders or champions.

We work with wellbeing providers, including Tidy Butt, Living Well with Lloyd Ashley, and the Lighthouse Charity, to ensure we continue to be the change for good within the construction industry, because mental health matters.

‘We continue to be the change for good’

Volunteer Days

We want our staff to positively impact the lives of others in broader community, and we encourage them to volunteer time suppoiting good causes.  It’s a great way to both give back to the community as well as to enhance job satisfaction and build additional skills and experience.

“Whitehead give back to our community”

Community Engagement
We want to make a difference to the communities in which we work and we commit to providing social value that changes communities for the better.

Education is a big part of what we invest in as a business which translates to school engagement through our outreach work, attending careers fairs and action-packed engineering days. We work with other educational establishments as well as schools too, including prisons and higher education colleges.

At Christmas, Easter and other special anniversaries, we collect donations from our colleagues and supply chain, and donate them to local good causes. We have previously supported Foodbank, Cardiff Womens Aid, HCT, Home Instead, Llamau, Noahs Ark Childrens Hospital, and other good causes.

We are proud of our relationship with Calon Hearts and are committed to installing defibrillators in the local community for free. To date we have installed or donated 12 defibrillators around the South Wales area.

Employee Challenges

Whitehead employees are always up for a challenge! Whether it be the Welsh 3 Peaks, a running race, a rowathon, 5 a side football, a cycle sportive . . . the list goes on! We love combining exciting challenges for our staff with raising money for worthwhile causes.

“We love an exciting challenge”
“We are keen to encourage diversity in our workforce”

Apprenticeships

We are proud Platinum members of the 5% Club. This is the highest occodale of the Club which acknowledges that at least 10% of our workforce are engaged in ‘earning and learning’ roles, and that this level has been maintained for at least the last 3 years.

We offer several different types of apprenticeship, working closely with both Universities and colleges to do so. We are keen to encourage diversity amongst our workforce and, as a result, we were delighted to be awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the first WalesOnline Diversity & Equality Awards.
