Here at Whitehead Building Services, we pride ourselves on working with local business and supporting the local supply chain in Wales. Much of the work we do is around the Education sector and, in particular, equipping schools with the sustainable systems they need to become future-proofed.
Two such projects involved the expansion of one school, Bassaleg Comprehensive School – involving a brand new building – and the build of a brand-new Welsh Medium school in Rhydfelin.
“At Whitehead we work hard to align ourselves to the key pillars of environment, sustainability and governance, or ESG – it’s something that’s intrinsic to everything we do and an important part of Welsh business, and business in the UK, going forward” explained Rhys Morton, Managing Director at Whitehead Building Services.
“As well as delivering sustainable solutions through the work we do in Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health and Maintenance work, we also strive to support our communities not only through who we work with but also through what we deliver, for example additional pupil spaces, better learning opportunities.
“Education and the role this plays in ESG is a core component for us as a business. We are hugely invested in training the next generation of Engineers, through our trade and degree apprenticeship schemes, and these trainees are working on sites with our professional teams day in day out”.
The new Welsh Medium School in Rhydefelin has been built on a current Primary School site. Phase one was completed on schedule in September and contains first-class education facilities, including a new games area and outdoor areas for students – enabling positive and healthy learning for students.
Rhys added “ We work with many businesses throughout Wales and the southwest. As an example, Protectorcomms, a privately owned Welsh business delivered on all the security systems for these schools – fire and intruder alarms, disabled refuge, CCTV systems and access control. This is testament to the talent we have within SMEs in Wales, and beyond – and working with businesses who share our values and goals is something which is really important to us as a business, too.”
